Many People Are Still In Love with Carriage Clocks

Posted By Albert Kessnerr on April 9, 2009 @ 6:36 am
by Albert Kessnerr

The Carriage Clock is so named because they were made to be carried by people who traveled by carriage. As you can well imagine, this could be a rigorous means of transportation, so the clocks were made to be tough. They had to stand up to the ride and not allow this to interfere with keeping time.

A Carriage Clock is not a large clock, but what sets it apart from other clocks of the era is the handle on top. This handle is what makes the clock portable and suitable for use in travel. The clocks were typically made of metal, most often brass. Glass covered the face of the clock to protect it from harm.

Carriage Clock History

With technological advancements in clocks in the 1800s, the Carriage Clock quickly became a fashionable trend, particularly among the wealthy. It was typical for those in the upper social classes to own these clocks, which were a common part of travel luggage at that time. The train was another popular and bumpy method of transportation for which Carriage Clocks were equally well suited; and they were typically stored in a leather carrying case during travel.

Beginning around the 1830s, hundreds of these clocks were manufactured and exported all over the world. These were simple, well made clocks with easy-to-read Roman numerals and black hands. The face was a white enamel, making it simple to read the time. In the absence of sunlight, candle light was the primary means of lighting, so the white enamel drastically improved the clock’s visibility.

The Ever Popular Carriage Clock

The Carriage Clock continues to be one of the most loved clocks of all time. Its popularity has continued to grow throughout the years, and many people proudly display them on mantel tops and book shelves in their homes. As little as 30 or 40 years ago it was easy enough to find an original clock, but they are becoming rarer now that they are a collector’s item. Replicas of the original Carriage Clock are available, and many of these can hardly be distinguished from the real thing.

A number of companies sell Carriage Clock replicas that are exactly like the original. These clocks have the same white enamel face and black Roman numerals that inspire memories of a bygone era. This style of Carriage Clock is called an Anglaise, and was created by the French as a nod to English tastes. Most replicas are of this type, owing to the style’s widespread popularity.

Carriage Clocks are still popular, more than a hundred years after they were introduced. Clock hunters eagerly scour estate sales and antique shops in search of an original clock. Even now, these clocks are considered a sign of elegance and good taste. When the search for an authentic clock comes up empty, many people choose to purchase a replica that closely matches the original. This clock has been incredibly popular, in spite of the passing of more than a century, and it is likely to remain popular into the foreseeable future.

Why People Flock to North Cyprus

North Cyprus is located in the East of the Mediterranean sea. The locals consist mainly of Greeks, but thousands of tourists visit North Cyprus every year. Cyprus is one of the most relaxing holiday spots in the world. Due to its mild weather Cyprus has become an extremely popular European holiday destination due to the beautiful surroundings and the sea views. A lot of Europeans have purchased land and property in North Cyprus as private holiday homes. The cost of land in North Cyprus has increase dramatically so finding accommodation in North Cyprus is a lot more difficult.

Someone interested in visiting Cyprus should be aware of its popularity. Since the island is so small, and so many people want to visit there, it can be hard to find a place to stay. Reservations should be made well in advance of taking the trip out there. There are a few hotels in Cyprus that a tourist can stay in. The Internet is a great place to find the cheapest hotels available in the Cyprus area. Many people who wish to purchase land in Cyprus must stay in a hotel while they look for houses and properties for sale. Hotel prices are generally high, and finding a place that has extended stay options can be difficult. A lot of hotels are located near the airport.

You could also stay in one of the many hostels which are many run by the locals, so you will receive a more traditional welcome and be staying right between some very historical buildings that have survived many centuries within the North Cyprus history. Hostels are also more commonly found in rural areas where you can enjoy the tranquil surrounding countryside.

One way that many Europeans do while on holiday in North Cyprus is to rent a private property for either a weekend, week, month, or sometimes even all summer or winter. Such holiday rentals are normally situated on or close to the beach, which has it’s advantages. These rental properties are also available on the Internet and there are a wide range of holiday homes to chose from at very reasonable rates.

Some people decide to purchase property in Cyprus. This ensures that they will always have a place to stay when they desired. Other people purchase property and rent it out to other vacationers. This is a great source of income. However, since Cyprus has become so popular, the property and home prices are very high. Usually prices range somewhere around $2,000 per square foot. For a 1,000 square foot home, this would come out to cost around 2,000,000 dollars. These prices are not for everyone. Finding accommodation in Cyprus for sale has become harder and harder as prices rise and properties are more in demand.

Finding accommodation takes some careful planning and foresight, but it is not impossible. Whether you want to enjoy a relaxing beach vacation, stay in the mountains, be pampered in a resort, or even purchase property in Cyprus, you can be sure to receive more than you hoped for. There are many good reasons why the island of Cyprus has become one of the most popular vacation spots for Europeans and other people. Any time spent in Cyprus will be relaxing, exciting, and beautiful.[I:http://www.leap-a.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/TimMartins3.jpg]

A Holiday Gift Everyone Will Love

Posted By John Bakers on @ 6:19 am
by John Bakers

When traveling on holiday, it is nice to remember the folks back home by loading up on souvenirs. The people that you left behind will love funny or memorable gifts from your journey, no matter how small they are. No one should expect you to bring presents, but they will certainly appreciate it when you do. In order not to drop a lot of cash, you can just buy for one or two people a holiday gift who are missing you on your trip.

Or you could remember the babysitter who is watching your children or your housesitter who is guarding your house while you are away. The people who helped you out will be grateful for a little extra something when you return home.

When shopping for souvenirs, be careful not to spend your whole vacation in the stores. If you are just going somewhere for a weekend, or a short week, it can be very time-consuming to try to provide presents for lots of people back home. You may spend days trying to find the perfect travel gifts and consequently you never get to enjoy yourself. Pick one afternoon of your trip to shop, or pick up little things along the way.

Buying souvenirs should be fun, and not stressful. If you focus too hard on finding wonderful presents for everyone, you might as well just stay home and hit a shopping mall. Your friends and family only want a token, something that says you were thinking of them on your holiday. You could even get the same thing for everyone – a collection of refrigerator magnets, pens, or ashtrays. The idea is not to spoil people, but to give them a token of your trip. Even though souvenir shops can seem cheesy and overprices sometimes, where else are you going to find a keychain in the shape of the Statue of Liberty or a mug shaped like a hula dancer?

These are things you can only find in souvenir shops. The cheesier the better! But do not forget to buy yourself something as well. If you are a generous person, you can easily get wrapped up in buying present for other people and you can forget that you need a souvenir from your trip as well.

When you are a tourist, don’t buy souvenirs on the first day or on the last day. Buy in the middle of the trip when you are relaxed and have a chance to see what the locality has to offer in terms of gifts. You might find a specialty jar of honey or a locally renowned delicacy to buy. Many regions are famous for one product, whether that be a food supply or a handwoven basket.

Do a little research and find something that will best represent your travels, something that will educate your friends about your destination. And whatever you do, do not wait until the last minute to buy your gifts. Out of desperation you will always spend too much money. Airports are not the place to buy a souvenir.

Crowd-free camping

Posted By Bill Holton on @ 5:13 am
by Cheryl L. True

At many state and private parks around the country, it seems like the only way to avoid overly crowded parks, lots of noise, and the long lines to the showers is to camp in the off-season. Here are tips to consider if you don’t want crowded camping.

Camp during the week, not on the weekends – many people are weekend campers. Not as many camp during the week. Although campgrounds will be busy in the peak summer months of July and August, it probably won’t be filled to capacity during the week. But, even if it is filled to capacity during the week; the beaches, biking trails, hiking trails, etc. won’t be as crowded because there won’t be the influx of people who come on the weekend to swim, hike, bike, etc.

Camp when school is still in session – if you have kids in school, this tip may not be that helpful, but keep in mind that it’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world to take your kids out of school to go on a camping trip, especially if you enrich that trip with learning activities such as going to the nature centers near or in the park; have excursions on the trails; and pick up materials at the park office or nature center that are usually available for free with different learning activities to do while hiking such as identifying trees and plants.

If you home school your children or if they go to a year-round school or modified year round school, there is probably at least one time during the year where it’s nice enough to take them camping when most other kids are in school, which will mean less crowded campgrounds.

Camp during slightly off peak times – the campgrounds are much less busy before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Just make sure you check to see when the park opens and closes for the year and when bathroom facilities are turned off for the season.

For example, at my favorite state park, the bathroom facilities are shut down around the 15th of October every year and aren’t turned back on until May 15, but part of the campground stays open year round. The pit toilets are open the entire year but anything with running water is turned off to avoid having pipes burst when the weather gets cold because the buildings aren’t heated. This isn’t a problem if you have a camper with a bathroom facilities. But if you tent camp or have a popup camper without a bathroom that’s another story.

Great hot dog recipes for campers

Posted By Cheryl L. True on @ 4:27 am
by Cheryl L. True

When I think of camping, I have visions of sitting around a campfire roasting hot dogs on a stick. But hot dogs can be the main ingredient in other recipes too. Want to try something different than a hot dog on a bun? Here are some recipes to consider.

Coney Islands – just grill or roast your hot dogs over the campfire, place them on a bun, and top with a dab of mustard, chili, cheese, and onions. Other favorite toppings include sauerkraut, relish, and catsup.

Spiders – here’s a novel way to prepare hot dogs and the kids really like them. In preparing, you’ll need a knife and some roasting forks or sticks. Cut the ends of each hot dog into quarters leaving about 1-1/2 to 2 inches in the middle uncut. You want to leave enough uncut to stick the fork in. Roast the dogs over the fire or hot coals in a grill. The “legs” will curl out as the hot dogs cook. You can also do them in the kitchen at home over a hot stove burner.

Shlagosh – you will need meat chili, potatoes, hot dogs and any other tasty foods. Pre-boil potatoes in a pot or just fry them in a pan. Heat chili in the fire and cook the hot dogs over the fire. Mix everything together in a bowl and eat up.

Tortilla Dogs – heat hot dogs and the tortillas too if desired. Place hot dog in tortilla, add condiments, roll and serve. Also good with chili.

Beanie Weenie Casserole – you’ll need baked beans, hot dogs, mustard, ketchup, brown sugar and onion. Pour beans in a baking pan or iron skillet. Slice hotdogs into 1/4-inch pieces and add to beans. Dice onions and add to beans. Add mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar. Stir until everything is mixed and cook for about 30 minutes.

Sausage and Chicken Jambalaya – for this one, you need chicken pieces (bone in), sweet sausages, potatoes (washed and cubed), green peppers (seeds removed and cut up), onions, vegetable oil, salt and pepper to taste and Cajun type spice mix if desired. Combine the first five ingredients in a large foil roasting pan. Drizzle oil on top and toss together until coated. Add spices and toss again. Cover with heavy duty aluminum foil and place on a preheated grill or campfire grate (over hot coals, not flames). Cook for approx 50 – 60 minutes, stirring mixture several times. Check meat for doneness.

Enjoying A Virtual Summer Sun During Winter Nights

Posted By Stewart M. Russell on March 14, 2009 @ 4:17 am
by Stewart M. Russell

No one can deny that the advent of the world wide web and the technology of the internet has led to some exciting possibilities, but in my experience one in particular stands out head and shoulders above the rest. This is the web cam, or web camera, a small device which can cost as little as a keyboard, but which is capable of extraordinary things. With one of these devices, you can broadcast live video, of pretty good quality, across the internet for anyone whose interested to have a look. It’s possible to pick a country – even a specific location, anywhere in the world – and enjoy a live video image of that place within a few mouse clicks.

For those people who are pursuing the idea of investing overseas, there are a number of problems to face, most significantly of course is the country they choose to invest in. Although many people jump straight in to the more well known locations, including Spain, because they have been there on holiday themselves, or it is considered a safe bet, an increasing number are looking at less well known countries which are starting to look much more attractive offers. However, a glance through the smart websites and professional pamphlets will make you doubt the wonder that’s advertised, since the photos are professionally taken, and may have been ‘tarted up’ a little, or taken on a particularly scorching day.

Overseas investors may seem to flit their attention from one country to another, from one continent to another, and the world suddenly seems a very small place indeed. Even those people who plan to go on holiday no longer seem as content with traditional resorts but instead turn their attention to little known locations that are less populated. We live in a world that is shrinking as a result of global technology, global business, cheap travel and online booking arrangements. We hardly have to leave the house to organise a trip to the other side of the world, yet there are still the miles to consider, and visiting several countries is still going to take time.

This of course is where web cams come into their own, and provide a wonderful alternative to travelling thousands of miles just to see a place for yourself. Whether you are looking at investing in property in a particular location, or going on holiday there, being able to watch a live video from that location means that you can see for yourself what it’s really like, and not just rely on leaflets and pictures which may have been spruced up a bit.

Of course, for those who look out of their window, either in the cold, grey climate of home, or from an office window out across the miles of freedom, being able to click quickly through a live web cam provides an opportunity to enjoy the glorious summer sun and happy climate of either an exotic locations somewhere in the world, or the very same view that they saw when on holiday – or even the view from their own property abroad!

Of course, there’s another advantage to having these web cams, whether they’re your own, or set up by businesses or private individuals in the area, and that is that they are fantastic for publicity and advertising. If you have purchased property abroad, and you intend to let this out, one of the biggest problems you face is trying to persuade people to come, that the location is fantastic, and that they’ll love it. This is especially true if you’ve chosen somewhere less well known. Having access to a web cam allows you to direct potential customers to it to allow them to see for themselves.

Besides being excellent selling points, web cams also have the added benefit of helping to increase the security of your property whilst you are away. If you have a web cam overlooking your property, or even facing into the building itself, then you have the ability to observe it at any time, wherever you happen to be. With the majority of cameras coming with the ability to video only if they detect movement, these represent cheap but effective security features, although obviously if you do let the building out, your residents will need you to remove these cameras for their own dignity and privacy.

It still seems incredible to me now that, as I sit here with the wind buffeting my window, the rain half heartedly smearing my view of the grey skies, my monitor is happily displaying live video from Javea, with white topped waves chasing one another gaily across the golden sands that stretch for miles, watched over by the distant mountains and an endless sky which seems to challenge my idea of blue. With live video fed to me from anywhere in the world, and virtual tours of properties across the globe, what does the future of technology hold for us, to make the next continent just that little bit closer?
