The success of Barry Bonds’ baseball career was really just the beginning of a story that may eventually overshadow his achievements. As an outfielder, Bonds racked up four MVP awards, each one of them in consecutive years. He was a player in the 2007 World Series, and has become one of the most well known baseball players of his time. In 2006, he was busy slugging homeruns and passed Ruth and Aaron to land in first place for the most homers of any ball player.
Unfortunately, it seems as if Bonds may have had help achieving this feat and there could be an asterisk next to this record. Rumors of steroid use swirled around Bonds and he was not a fan favorite, to put it mildly. Bonds didn’t seem to care much for the fans either and Bonds managed to alienate fans and sportswriters alike. Bonds still holds the home run record at 762, as well as the record for the most home runs in a single season (73). While an accomplished player, Binds managed to burn a lot of bridges and no team in the Major Leagues would sign him on for the 2008 season.
With an accomplished career and his financial security already assured, Bonds became a target of investigation in connection to the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative case and was charged with perjury for having lied about his steroid use.
This has cast a pall over his entire career. Fans questioned the validity of his MVP awards and his achievements within the game – and the league itself has also expressed concern. Achievements which came through the use of steroids, the reasoning goes, are not to be valued as highly as those accomplished solely through an athlete’s natural faculties.
A pall has been thrown over a career in baseball which began in high school, when Bonds was courted by the Giants while still a senior. He did not end up signing on with the Giants, choosing to pursue a college education. Bonds played in college as well, where in a single year he scored seven hits in a row in the College World Series and was picked as All American selection of the year by the publication Sporting News.
In March 2009, Bonds will appear in court to face the obstruction of justice charges related to the BALCO investigation. Bonds still insists that he never took steroids knowingly – but this is a matter which has yet to be resolved in court and is sure to be closely followed by baseball fans.
Off the diamond, Binds has become involved with working with sick and terminally ill children. Bonds has an honorary chair with the Macy’s Tree Lighting Committee, which fundraises for the children’s hospice UCSF Children’s Hospital Palliative Care Program.
In order to ensure that you hit your target each and every time, quality hunting scopes are essential. Rifle scope technology continues to advance with ever more accurate designs. Follow these recommendations to keep up with the latest features so you can purchase the exact scope that fits your needs.
The Basics
Three basic questions to answer before you decide which rifle scope model fits your needs:
Your shooting style
Type of weapon
Options you prefer
An important thing to remember is that a longer lens means a more powerful scope. More lenses within the scope increase magnification by bending light rays through the lenses. In contrast, a short rifle scope contains smaller lenses, and proportionately lowers magnifying power.
Multicoated lenses can increase the scope’s clarity in conditions where there is little light. This can help you more accurately view game during hunts in the early dawn or late evening. This is, of course, the main goal of buying hunting scopes.
The Benefits
Magnification– In thick woods, or in relatively close quarters, a 15-power scope should provide plenty of magnification. Any shot is likely to be within range under these conditions.
If you take short shots averaging 75 yards or less, a 4X scope should work just fine. On the other hand, if you want to be able to take longer and more difficult shots, consider a variable range magnification scope. The most popular of these models has a flexible range of 3X to 9X, for shots of less than 50 yards on up to 200 yards.
For much longer range shots, there are very high power scopes available that can help you shoot game at distances of 500 yards or more.
Ready, Aim, Fire– Hunting scopes are there to enhance your ability to shoot exactly what you sight in. There are wide ranges of options that offer superior optical performance. Objective lens rifle scopes can be purchased equipped resistant to shock, water, and fog.
Adjustment– Another important factor to consider before you buy hunting scopes is adjustment. You should always stick with scopes that are adjustable for wind and elevation. Make sure that the adjustments have enough detail for your needs.
There are numerous styles of hunting scopes including sniper, spotting, night vision ,and sighting, in addition to pistol, military, and tactical.
Reticles– A reticle is also commonly known as the crosshairs. These are the markings on the scope that help shooters accurately aim a shot. To evaluate what kind of reticle will work best for you, consider the type of game that you hunt, the environment in which you hunt, and of course, your preferences.
Some of the most popular brands of hunting scopes include Bushnell, Nikon, and Leupold. There is no shortage of options for reticles; there is even a multi-shot reticle. For instance, Leupold offers series scopes that come in seven different reticles.
There are reticles designed to help the long-range shooter. The varmint reticle provides five aiming points, to tailor make the scope to a particular load, rifle, and compensate for wind. You can sight the rifle in for distances from 500 to 100 yards.
With the great variety of hunting scopes on the market, you have no excuse for missing another shot. Utilize this information to help you determine which rifle scope model is best for you.
Mike Tyson: Triumph and Tragedy
There have been few figures in the world of boxing – or sports in general for that matter who have taken a larger place in popular culture than has Mike Tyson. Tyson is one of the most fearsome opponents ever to step into the boxing ring; in fact, he often won matches before they had begun, so intimidated were other boxers of this man. He has done prison time, fought drug addiction and generally become infamous both in and out of the ring.
Mike Tyson’s Rise to Stardom and the Heavyweight Championship
By the time he reached adulthood, Mike Tyson already had racked up a string of arrests, having had dozens of run-ins with the law. However, it was boxing that began to turn his life around, giving him structure and an outlet for his energy. His trainer and in many ways, surrogate father Cus D’Amato ingrained focus and a competitive drive to win in the young Tyson. Following the death of this father figure, Tyson rapidly began to unravel and quickly fell from grace with the sports world.
But all of this was still ahead of Tyson, who was quickly gaining a reputation as a fearsome puncher and a future champion. He disposed his first 19 opponents by knockout, the majority of which were finished in the first round. After winning the title, Tyson remained very active, defending his title and acquiring other title belts in quick succession. The man seemed to be unbeatable, and untouchable.
The Beginning of the End
It was the upset victory of James Buster Douglas (with 1-42 odds against him) in the tenth round of a brutal match which cost Tyson both his title belt and the impression that he simply could not be beaten. Before long, Tyson would be in prison, serving a sentence for a rape.
Tyson’s return to boxing was something which many, not only boxing fans had been eagerly awaiting. He quickly won a title belt on his return to the sport; but a match which saw Tyson against Evander Holyfield was the event which really marked his downfall as a serious contender in the field of boxing. Holyfield took Tyson down in the 11th round. There was a rematch of the bout, in which as everyone knows, Tyson bit a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear, leading to his disqualification. There have been minor comebacks, major defeats such as that seen in his demolition by Lennox Lewis and he has come to be seen by many fans as a sad case.
Mike Tyson Today
Tyson is more famous now for his facial tattoos and his many arrests and stints in rehab clinics. There is still talk now and again of a Tyson comeback and the boxer has expressed remorse for his actions both publicly and privately. He seems to still be finding his way in the world – it is still far too early to say what may lie in Tyson’s future.

Born in Latrobe, PA, Arnold D. Palmer is widely thought to be one of the best golfers ever to play the game. Palmer has been the winner of a number of PGA Tours as well as the Champions Tour since his first big tournament win in 1955. Palmer is simply known as “The King” among many fans and players alike and has achieved worldwide fame. He is acknowledged, along with Gary Player and Jack Nickaus as one of the Big Three in the game. With the advent of televised golf matches in the 1950′s, Palmer’s playing which led to a growing interest in the sport.
Arnold began early, having learned his love for the game from his father, Deacon; a greens keeper at the Latrobe Country Club. At the tender age of seven, Palmer scored a 70 at the nearby Bent Creek Country Club, an impressive achievement, especially considering his age. Palmer cut his teeth in the game on the then only nine hole Latrobe Country Club course, on which he was allowed to play early in the morning and late in the afternoon when members did not have tee times scheduled.
He attended the popular Wake Forest University appropriately on a golf scholarship and served for three years in the Coast Guard. During this time, while continuing to develop his golf skills, he married Winifred Walker who he met while playing in a Pennsylvania golf tourney. During his rookie season, he won the Canadian Open and surged ahead with personality and business ideas that made golf a sport people became interested in and wanted to watch-many people give Palmer the credit for the sport becoming so popular.
He won his first major championship at the 1958 Masters and by 1960, he claimed his title as one of golf’s leading stars. Signing with sports agent Mark McCormack, in 1960, McCormack was asked in later years what made Arnold so special. He replied, “his good looks, his modest background, the way he played golf, his risk taking and wearing his heart on his sleeve, and his involvement in so many exciting early televised finishes.” Palmer was one the first US player to win The Open Championship in England-Ben Hogan won it in 1953; making Arnold an international star in the eyes of golf fans everywhere. Arnold won seven major championships including The Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964; the US Open in 1960; and, The Open Championship in 1961 and 1962. His best years were perhaps 1960-1963 where he championed 29 PGA Tour events in just four seasons.
Arnold Palmer was the 1960 Sports Illustrated pro athlete of the year; 1960 also saw him winning the coveted Sportsman of the Year award. He continued to win a dedicated fan base (so dedicated, in fact that they came to be known as “Arnie’s Army”). In 1967, Palmer became the first professional golfer to earn more than one million over the course of his career. It is a testament to Palmer’s ability that he continued to win at least one PGA tour event every year until 1970, even against competition from Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus – and in 1971, he won four PGA tour events.
The winner of four Vardon Trophies for low average score and a member on six different Ryder Cup teams, Palmer was by 1980 eligible for the PGA Senior Tour – an event which his famous name brought success to. The event would eventually be renamed the Champions Tour; Palmer won ten events on this tour and thanks to the talent of his agent McCormack, Palmer earned more in endorsements, charity events and sponsorships than any other player in the sport. Arnold Palmer has even won the highest honor given to civilians in the US – the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award, which was presented to Palmer by President Bush.
Palmer made his 50th and last appearance in the Masters in 2004. After failing to make the cut for the 2005 Senior Open, Palmer announced that he would no longer compete in the Senior Majors. However, in 2004 he made one of his greatest shots, getting onto the 18th green in his second shot from more than 200 yards. Even Palmer himself was impressed.
Beyond golf, Arnold is involved in many businesses including the Bay Hill Club and Lodge (the home of the Arnold Palmer Invitational), helped organize and create The Golf Channel, and helped to build the first golf course in the People’s Republic of China. He started The Arnold Palmer Design Company and moved to Orlando, Florida in 2006. He has owned the Latrobe Country Club since 1971-something Laaaytrobians won’t let anyone forget. In 2000, he was ranked a deserved sixth greatest player of all time in Golf Digest and was awarded the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award (1998) and made it into the World Golf Hall of Fame (1974). Perhaps Palmer’s most popular characteristic is indeed his character-a warm, full of laughter, genuine man who simply loved to play golf.
Karate is a centuries old marital art and sport that originates from Japan. It is an art whereby the person practices to harmonize their mind body and spirit. It trains them to be disciplined and focused. It is not just about fighting, but also teaches you how to control and master yourself.
So how is it like to learn karate in a formal setting? Well, firstly, you will walk into a huge and spacious place called the dojo. Your sensei (teacher) will then greet you and on to the first lesson you will go with your fellow peers. Lessons are generally spent on staances and various strikes and blocks.
One can also get to practice with a parttner on the various karate sequences to familiarize themselves with it. Usually, one will be the attacker and the other will be the defender. After a few rounds, the sensei will ask positions to switch. Meaning the attacker now becomes the defender and the defender is now the attacker.
The beginners will start with their rank of white belt and gradually through demonstration and sparring tests, will progressed to yellow belt, then red,etc all the way to black belt. Now being at black belt doesn’t mean you are at the pinnacle of karate marital arts. There are still specifically ten dans to go through. You can then progress to 1st degree black bellt, then 2nd degree, all the way up to 10th degree black belt.
Now karate is not just about beating people up, on the contrary, it should only be used to defend yourself. Being a black belt in karate does not mean you are invincible and can beat people up. It does mean there is a greater sense of responsibility in not causing grievous hurt to people and protecting those around you.
Karate can be a rewarding sports and martial arts to take up, and if you want to start learning it without first committing to formal lessons, you can learn from karate manuscripts from your own home. It is a great introduction to karate and you can familiarize yourself with the karate sequences first. But remember real life ability to defend yourself comes from learning from a competent karate instructor.
How many of you believe that soccer warm ups are important? Most parents and to some extent coaches believe that young players do not have the need to warm up. But I’m here to tell you otherwise. By creating a structured training session with plenty of time for your players to warm up, you give them a gift that will last a life time. Young players will develop a great habit and reduce the risk of injuries.
Never allow your players to stretch before they have warmed up. The warm up should involve a light jog around the park until their bodies warm up and start to sweat.Once the body core temperature has risen a few degrees, only then should you allow your players to stretch. Once the core muscles are pumping with blood they become more elastic and have greater flexibility.
Once your players have completed a few laps of the field they can proceed to stretching. Always remember to get your players into good habits and steer them away from static stretches. In todays modern game dynamic stretching should always be employed. The stretching movements of the players should replicate those of a match or training. By utilising dynamic stretching you can gradually increase the working load of the session without running the risk of injuries.
For this drill each player takes hold of a ball. They hold the ball slightly away from their bodies while trying to hit the ball with their knees. They continue this exercise for about 30 seconds changing and using alternate knees. This drill is great for warming up the quads which are used to power your knee lifts. The motion is also great for stretching the quads, groin areas and hamstrings. The required knee lifts also ensures the players heart rate increases preparing the players for the rest of the session.
Toe to hand is another great warming up drill. This warm up drills requires the players to work in pairs. One player stands facing the other with the ball at waist height. The other player kicks the ball with his toes while alternating feet. This drill should last for 30 seconds and then the players swap roles. This drill is great for warming up the hamstrings and giving your heart a good workout at the same time. It also gives you a great stretch and increases your kicking range follow through.
The Toe to Hand drill is very easy. Each player tries to kick their finger tips with their toes. Instead of kicking a ball you reach out and try and kick your fingers. Obviously the left leg will then follow the right leg and vice versa. This drill gives your hamstrings are greater stretch and also replicates the motion of kicking which will be needed later on the session.
Once your players have warmed up and spent some time stretching, introduce some balls into the training session and continue to increase the pace and the work loads of the training drills.
Having a great swing in golf can be a curse. I know many people who have great swings but can’t convert on the golf course. It’s almost a curse where you have the mechanics down but you just can’t score well. This proves that there’s something else out there we need.
Through all my years of teaching, one of the biggest questions that typically comes up in conversation is “How do the pro’s get to be so dang good?” Most of the time, it’s not our swing, but it’s our approach to the game….more specifically….practice.
Pro’s are Pro’s because they have talent, a coach, and the will to eat, sleep and drink golf! However, I do know that they are able to take their practice to the course…and that my friends is the biggest trick of all.
So now we know the key is to take what we learn on the range to the course. The only method I know about is while practicing, you have to imagine that you are on the course actually playing. Imagine you are getting ready to hit a shot.
For some of us, we get a little anxious because our buddies are watching or theres money on the line (while we imagine we are on the course). For others, we have no emotion because when we golf its social and we could care less what we shoot (although we want our game to magically be great and delivered without real practicelike crossing our fingers). In either case, you are searching for the moment. The MOMENT is when you are locked into what you want to execute, how the ball should lookthis is found through your pre-shot routine what why it’s so important.
Now, go and hit the ball. If it does not behave like you planned, do not get discouraged. It simply means you dont have the shot in your bag. Keep practicing this routine until you get it. I assure you better scores to come on the course. It will also show you that ALL of us think we have a typical 150 yard shot.but most of us just dont.
During a basketball game there will be many situations where players will be dealing with one on one play. It can be guarding the basket, following the ball, preventing a shot or whatever is happening that dictates players going directly against another player on the opposing team.
One on one play is very important to the game. It is something that players must practice and that they must master in order to be an effective basketball player. No player can be good without learning the basics of one on one play.
The following four tips outline some important things to keep in mind when practicing one on one play or during a game when you are using one on one tactics.
Tip #1 Master Stationary Moves
Stationary moves are used once you have the ball. You will either step and pass off to another player or square up to the basket and shoot. You should practice them with another player or a couple other players. You want to master shooting, catching and passing. It is important during stationary moves that you are aware at all times. You do not want to get a violation for holding the ball or have the ball stolen by opposing players.
Tip #2 Have a Strong Side Drive Strategy
When you get the ball and are trying to get around a defender you need strong moves to do so. A strong side drive will allow you to fake out the defender so you can take advantage of his reaction and move around him or pass off the ball. You need to be able to react quickly to whatever the reaction of the defender is. You should be prepared for every possibility so that your reactions become second nature. You have a split second to decide what your move will be so you have to have your moves perfected.
Tip #3 Master the Cross Over Step
The cross over step is used after a side drive. The crossover prevents the player from getting wrapped up in his own feet and falling. It is a coordinated move that allows the player to be fluid and quick when cutting back to dodge the guard. Every player should practice doing a jab step then cross over step. This is essential to being able to get to the basket and in moving around opposing players.
Tip #4 Know When to Dribble and When not to Dribble
Dribbling is often given a lot of attention in the beginning when a player is learning the game. It helps improve coordination and gets the player comfortable with handling the ball.
The problem with dribbling, though, is that there are many violations that can be called due to errors or slip ups when dribbling. It is too easy to make a simple mistake and get fouled.
Another issue with dribbling is that it is a slow method of moving the ball. It is best used to stall or travel a short way with the ball. Dribbling should not be relied upon as the main method of moving the ball. That should be reserved for passing.
