When selecting fishing gear keep in mind that there are many choices out on the market. There are many kinds of rods, reels and fishing accessories out there giving you a limitless number of possibilities even in combinations. In order not to get lost looking for fishing gear you should have an idea about what you want to do, what kind of fishing you intend to do. The first thing you need to decide is whether you will be fishing in salt or fresh water. Then decide if it is going to be heavy or medium tackle or even fly fishing.

When it comes to purchasing equipment for salt water fishing then the next thing you need to think about is whether you will be fishing in deep or shallow waters. Certain rods and reels are made for boats while others are manufactured for shore fishing. To give you an example of how to select a rod and reel we will examine the options you have when it comes to salt water fishing.

When doing salt water fishing in relatively shallow water you will need medium to heavy fishing gear. If you are fishing in the Gulf of Mexico for example you will be going after emigrational species such as Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, and Cobia.

Fishing in salt water for Spanish Mackerel for example requires a medium light to medium action rod at a minimum as the fish can reach a weight of seven or eight pounds in schools of large fish. The reel you choose should be something along the lines of a Abu Garcia 7000 Inshore Classic or Abu Garcia Revo Toro 50 HS.

Spinning reels should be selected if you intend to be fishing along the coast. For coastal fishing a reel that has about two hundred yards and 10 to 12 pounds of line. A good tip is to tie a steel leader perhaps 12-14 inches to prevent fish from biting the line.

If you will be fishing by the coast on shallow waters for King Mackerel then you will be needing a heavier set of fishing gear. Just because King Mackerel is a considerably larger type of fish. This type of fish can reach 20 lb in weight and you will need a heavier rod and line.

These fish will require way more than 200 yards of fishing line off your reel in seconds! When fishing for these monsters you want to have a medium heavy rod, seven to nine feet in length and preferably paired with a heavy salt water reel like the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 reel.

In order to get the most out of your salt water fishing trip you should have the best gear and fishing equipment for the job. Abu Garcia reels are good salt water reels and you should consider getting one if salt water fishing is what you intend to be doing. Don’t spend too much though try and get a good price for an Abu Garcia reel online.
