Truck bed covers pertain to any type of hood that wraps a pickup’s cargo box. Truck bed covers can be soft or stiff. The use of a truck bed cover is to provide a sleeker looking truck while draping a storage corner in the truck. A truck bed cover can protect materials such as heavy furniture and groceries from theft, damage, and weather conditions like rain.

Apart from hiding a messy cargo bed, truck bed covers also provide an advantage when it comes to saving money on gas. An uncovered truck bed results in greater wind resistance, forcing the engine to work harder to propel the vehicle. It is estimated that a truck bed cover can help save up to 10 percent on fuel costs.

There are three common types of truck bed covers, including retractable, soft, and hard covers. Each has distinct advantages and disadvantages, and truck owners should think carefully about their needs before deciding on the type of truck bed cover to buy.

A hard truck bed cover is made from fiberglass, aluminum, or hard plastic, and is usually a smooth, sleek design in a color that matches the truck. In order to access the truck bed, one simply lifts one side of the bed cover. A hard style bed cover is resistant to various kinds of weather, making it one of the most durable types available.

However, there are disadvantages. First, the hard is the most expensive among all kinds of covers. Another downside is that it is hard to remove, so it may not be recommended to truck owners who need to place their things vertically.

The soft type is made from a durable fabric. It has bows to maintain its shape under tough weather conditions like rain or snow. They can be attached to the truck using snaps, a groove and tongue set-up, or Velcro. There are some models that can be rolled up, while some have hinged lids.

A soft type of truck bed cover is designed to withstand the weight of two people standing on it, and some are even manufactured to include a built-in tent. One disadvantage of this type, though, is that it simply isn’t as secure as a hard style truck bed cover.

A retractable style truck bed cover is widely considered the most popular among truck owners, owing to its convenience. It lets truck owners haul large items without the need to take off the cover. But, this type of truck bed cover may cut down on the available space and can also be vulnerable to leaks.

Truck bed covers vary in prices. The retractable type can go as low as $500, while the hard type can be had for as low as $600. The soft type meanwhile can be as cheap as $200. To get the best rates, truck owners should shop online as there are many websites offering discounted truck bed covers. It is also more convenient to shop online for truck bed covers.

Truck bed covers provide good looks while helping trucks save on gas. Truck owners should know first the characteristics of each type before shopping online to get the most out of their truck bed cover.
