Food is our essential source of energy and vitality. As human beings, we need to eat at regular intervals in order to replenish what the body uses up during the day.

Many of the common ailments of human beings are a result of improper nutrition. Our body needs constant supply of energy producing carbohydrates, fats, fiber, proteins, and water. It also needs vitamins and minerals for other bodily functions like maintaining the digestive system, neutralizing acidity and clearing toxins. When the body does not get these nutrients in optimal form and the right quantity, it falls ill.

Fresh vegetables and freshly cooked food provide most of the nutrients that are required by the body. Unfortunately, we do not take the pains of cooking fresh food but rely on microwave food and other frozen items which are readily available. This is because processed food is usually cheaper, lasts longer in your refrigerator and can be cooked within minutes by just putting it in the microwave oven.

The food processing industry has no doubt ensured that we get food which is hygienic and which can be stored for longer periods, but such food has been proven to be nutritionally inferior compared to fresh food. Techniques like drying, heating, salting, and separating alter the nutritional content of the food items.

As we grow older, our nutritional needs change. As a child, we need a stronger input of proteins for muscular growth, while during the teens; we need a larger dose of carbohydrates for that extra energy. Elderly people may require a lot of water and minerals. Therefore, it is important to tune our diets as we grow. But food habits acquired during early years die hard and if we are not able to switch to new diets, our body may suffer from nutritional imbalances.

It is important to refer to the nutritional guides and standards published by the government and implement them in our daily life.

Apart from that, it is also a good practice to consume nutritional supplements, which are designed to provide balanced nutrition to the body. These will take care of supplementing all the nutrients which are not made available to the body through the routine diet.

It is also not advisable to just take a particular vitamin or mineral supplement, which is found to be lacking because nutrients work together. Excessive consumption of one may lead to unknown health effects.

In addition to the right mix, the right amount, the correct balance and the right form are also essential for a good nutrition supplements program. Choose a program that is customizable for various age groups, thus providing complete health for the whole family.
