Checklist for Computer Safety Online

I have done computer consulting for many years now and have seen many things.  Obviously, broken computers would be one of them, but some of the most scary things that I have seen have been in relation to the Internet.  I have seen client’s computers get hacked in an instant, rampant attacks by viruses, and so much spyware that there is nothing you can do except re-install the operating system.

In an effort to combat a lot of these problems caused by my customers surfing online, I have created a group of software that I encourage all my clients to use to protect their computer from problems due to surfing online, and as a preventative measure from future problems.

I recommend to each of them to use Internet privacy software.  A good example of this would be ParetoLogic Privacy Controls.  This ensures that all the history and cookies of the sites that they visit are removed from their computer when they are done and ensures that the next computer user will not have access to their banking information and passwords from other sites.

The other piece of software that I suggest using is a web Anonymizer software.  This software hides the IP address of the computer from would be identity thieves, reducing the chances that your computer is hacked.

Since I have implemented the use of these software packages on client’s computers, there has been a drop in calls.  Thankfully, I am no longer called for repeat computer problems – now the calls are just for serious ones.
